Jewish students visit the house of Aristides in Cabanas de Viriato

Young Judaea, a Jewish youth movement associated with the Jewish women's organization Hadassah in the United States,  brought a group of students to visit the house of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, Casa do Passal,  in Cabanas de Viriato recently and learn about his Act of Conscience from one of his grandsons.

Large numbers of American students travel and live abroad in the  gap year between high school and college.

Many Jewish students spend that year living, working and learning about their roots in Israel, as well as visiting  other locations of interest.

Some of the heritage trips focus also on Lost Jewish Communities, which involves travel to Portugal, Uganda, South Africa and India.

Portugal had several thriving Jewish communities 500 years ago and many vestiges can still be found today.   The Inquisition reached Portugal from Spain in 1497 and was characterized by an attempt to massively convert the Jews. Many Jews fled Portugal. With no place to go, some converted to Christianity, becoming known as New Christians or Marranos. Others had their children taken from them to be raised in Catholic homes. Some were imprisoned and tortured to death as they continued to practice their religion. Lastly, a large group pretended to convert to Christianity while secretly practicing Judaism, becoming Cryto-Christians.  Hundreds of years later, in modern day Portugal, they still remember fragments of their Jewish ancestry and some still practice Jewish rituals in secret, such was the case with the community in Belmonte.  The visitors to Portugal may meet some of these Jews who now struggle with their identity and with returning to a full Jewish life.
Sites worth visiting include:
- Jewish quarter Judiaria) of Porto, Tomar and Belmonte
- Wineries in the Porto and Dão regions
- Serra da Estrêla Nature Park

- In Lisbon, Rossio Square, site of Inquisition Trials and Memorial in the Largo de S. Domingos

Francisco Dias

Sousa Mendes house at risk of imminent collapse

According to Victor Coias, a highly regarded structural engineer, Sousa Mendes’s mansion, Casa do Passal is in a situation of imminent collapse.
As president of GeCORPA, an association of architectural restoration companies, Coias says that the serious deterioration has been caused mostly by accumulated water damage due to the enormous hole in the roof.
These statements can be seen in a video available on GeCORPA website.produced by the film-maker Francisco Manso with the support of STAP. The video also shows a lovely simulation of how the Casa do Passal would look after restoration, once the walls and floors are consolidated and the roof is rebuilt entirely, in order to restore structural integrity to the building.
The Casa do Passal at Cabanas de Viriato is owned by the Sousa Mendes Foudation, a private foundation funded mostly by the Portuguese Government and by donations.
Before the Casa do Passal was classified as a Portuguese National Monument by IGESPAR in 2005, the floor were shored up and the roof was mended by the volunteers John Crisostomo e Antonio Rodrigues. This was the first tangible initiative to save the Sousa Mendes’s mansion, and it received valuable assistance from a number of local people from Cabanas de Viriato and Beijoz who gave wood beams and ceramic tiles, who helped to remove the debris, who housed and fed the hard-working volunteers, etc. In this manner, the Casa do Passal was saved from the rains, but only for a few winters.
Inevitably, the roof began to gape again since 2008, showing bigger and bigger holes as the wood beams continue to rot away and the ceramic roof tiles continue to fall.
That’s why it is so urgent to place a large but temporary cover on the Casa do Passal, which will also serve to protect the interiors during the whole of the rebuilding project. The temporary cover is estimated to cost 150.000€ and would have to be approved by IGESPAR.
On 19-Julho-2010, the 125th anniversary of Aristides birth, a campaign was launched in the blogs and in Facebook to raise funds to pay for this temporary cover. The initiative “A Birthday Gift in Memory of Aristides” aims to transform the on-line support of the 15.000+ Facebook friends into tangible donations to help repair his house.
Meanwhile, the roof tiles keep falling, more and more every day…
There’s no time to loose to save the Casa do Passal and the memory of Aristides de Sousa Mendes in in home town, Cabanas de Viriato.

Quantas telhas cairam hoje?

…to see the actual ink that gave my father, and our family, life…

Having just recently discovered the diplomat who saved her family in 1940, Olivia Mattis is now anxious to see the Registry book and the “actual ink that gave my father, and our family, life…"

Her father Daniel Matuzewitz, only 7 years-old then, was travelling on his father’s passport, Joseph Matuzewitz, who was given visa number 1178 on 31-May-1940, by Aristides de Sousa Mendes, then the Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux.

Daniel’s mother Lucie and three other family members are also registered in the visa book of the Consulate of Portugal in Bordeaux.

Lucie’s testimony about the family’s escape clearly details the efforts of Sousa Mendes, with the help of Rabbi Kruger, in granting visas to as many refugees as possible.

The Matuzewitz/Mattis family made it to the

safe-haven in Portugal and stayed in Coimbrafor a short time, then travelled by boat to
Brazil, until moving toNew York in 1941.
Thanks to his daughter’s research, Daniel Matuzewitz, now Mattis, was finally able to express his gratitude to Aristides Mendes, one of the diplomat’s 42 grand-children, in an emotional meeting at the Salt Lake City home of the Universityof Utah physics professor, in July 2010.

Connecting the Matuzewitz/Mattis and Sousa Mendes families is a momentous event, thanks to FACEBOOK and a lot of persistence. We may never know the names of most of the refugees who were saved by Sousa Mendes. The Bayonne Consulate Registry book went missing, and some visas were never recorded, in the rushed visa granting marathon which is estimated to have saved 30.000 refugees.
But the Registry of visas of the Consulate of Portugal in Bordeaux records the names of only a few of the many lucky families.

This powerful testimony to the Act of Conscience of Aristides de Sousa Mendes stands, and can be now be seen at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York.

According to Museum Director David Marwell, the visa Registry, on loan from the archives of Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE), is "one of the most important historical artifacts" on display in the Museum.
To the Mattis family, those rushed scribblings made all the difference.
